Marshall Islands Racing Canoes

Racing canoes fly across a sunlit lagoon. The dynamics are the same as those developed for the much larger voyaging canoes, as depicted by Louis Choris, artist with the Von Kotsebue expedition that visited the Marshalls in 1816.
When sawn lumber was introduced, Marshallese canoe builders quickly became skillful builders of boats of European design. But canoes were still built for fishing, racing and short trips.
