Crossing to Molokai
An 18th Century Hawaiian double canoe (wa'a kaulua) struggles across the Kaiwi Channel.
When powerful ocean swells driven by the Northeast Tradewinds bounce off the islands and collide in mid-channel, they can heap up suddenly to great size. On such days, the waters between the islands can become as rough as any within the tropic latitudes.
In the distance is the rugged coast of Oahu.
